"nu metal bands just ripped off Sepultura's "Roots" and all of its down-tuned simple groove riffing so psuedo-thrash sounded like an appropriate descriptor idk. :-]"
There are nu-metal albums that predate Roots though.
Mainly Korn

I don't know at what point (pre or post Roots) but I know Korn have said that they were influenced by Sepultura, too.

I find it interesting that while the vinyl solves the brickwalling, it's still noticeably somewhat compressed. Rick fuckin Rubin man... I admire him as a person that guides a band throughout the recording process and aids in molding the album into the final product but he damn near destroys every piece of audio he's involved with. It's still miles better than the CD anyway

Can't decide whether I like this or the s/t tbh... they're both equally good in my eyes
The first album can be classified as avant-garde metal in the same way Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante can be... but it's hard to properly label this because it ventures into different kinds of metal and rock genres

I just call it alternative metal and leave it at that.

15 years, fuk
It wasn't too long asfter it was released that I first heard it, maybe about two years after
Sounds every bit as good now, hasn't really aged despite being part of the Nu Metal trend, there was just so much more to this and SOAD as a whole

Aw man, this is filled with nostalgia jams. The choppiness of Prison Song is probably the best, if most jarring way they could've started this.

I've actually always wondered how this album would sound after some ganja

Just not here in the UK because it's illegal and nobody here would ever, ever break the law so brazenly

Probably my favourite album by these dudes with the S/T close behind.

Illegal here in Ireland as well, technically, but noone ever seems to be caught unless they're growing, selling or carrying massive amounts of it. Have to be extra careful as well myself though being a teacher.

Flash back 15 years later this album still fucking rules. I remember seeing Chop Suey being played on MTV and I was hooked immediately... I was always torn between this and their S/T I think this one has a bit more going on though.

Yeah dude, I was about 13 years old and used to have this on my Walkman for the half hour walk in to school for a solid six months.

Thats what's up! Crap, to even think about using that damn Walkman again.. I think I had the cd on a little shitty portable cd player I had to hold it perfectly so it didn't skip what a pain in the ass that was

Album Rating: 4.5
Haha yes mate, my Walkman was so bad for skipping that I used to make mixed tapes for my portable cassette player instead for my paper round that I had so that I could buy CDs because limewire took a whole day to download a single song on dial up... Damn I feel old!
