All of Californication is mixed very loud
|
| |
i think by the way has the same problem to a lesser degree, but cali is honestly hard to listen to just because of the production. i think technical terms like "compression" and "loudness war" can be attributed directly to the effect of rubin's production on the sound of the band: the band's sound is ironically "compressed" as making all the instruments loud restricts the dynamic range and results in a confusing, harsh garble of sounds trying to force themselves on the listener all at once. even the gentler timbres are fucked up in a way that makes em slightly harsh rather than light and beautiful as they should have been.

Fixed
Sadly, the loudness war has been one of the most irritating things about Rubin over the years, especially in recent times.

"Under The Bridge is so good, definitely prefer that side of the band."
I definitely prefer the funky side of the band, but Under the Bridge is probably my favorite song by them :]

Whenever your headphones sound like they're being torn apart from the inside, it's safe to assume whatever you're listening to was produced by Rick Rubin

I have different times where I prefer either side of the band. Deepends on mood I guess

Until, to some extent, By The Way, both "sides" of the band were quite enjoyable.
Now, none is to be honest.

Stadium Arcadium had some jams. I think if it had been a single disc, it would have been way better.
I'm With You, however...

Agree, Stadium Arcadium is terribly overlong and kills the potential it had to be a great album. I'm With You is really poor.

I dig Stadium Arcadium quite a lot. Only like 2 tracks there I don't like there. If they had taken the best songs from there and made a single disc, it would have up there with this one as their best imo

I'm With You is brought down by AK and the new guitarist being so timid. Hope he shows his talent in the next album. Ithink the band lost quite a lot in songwriting with John leaving too.

If and Readymade. I don't hate them per se but they dont do much for me

"I think the band lost quite a lot in songwriting with John leaving too."
That's not even debatable, hard fact.

@Deathschool, I have noticed that as well with Breaking the Girl. However, some mixes don't have that problem. It's weird.

Train of Thought by Dream Theater has the same problem. I think it's Endless Sacrifice that's mixed more loudly than the others. The same goes for Sideshow Symphonies by Arcturus, as Shipwrecked Frontier Pioneer is mixed more quietly than the other tracks

"I'm With You, however..."
I'm With You is atrocious imo. Josh was fine in Dot Hacker, but I hate his lack of chemistry with the other members of RHCP on I'm With You. His playing with them is nowhere near as good as Frusciante or Dave Navarro, or even Hillel Slovak or Jack Sherman. The entirety of the album screams "middle of the road" and feels incredibly lifeless

That's what I'm saying, CK. Everyone knows the mixing problem that Californication has, but it's only certain songs on this album.

Anyone who says stadium is bad needs to listen to it on vinyl. Sounds completely different.
