Always came across to me, when taking the rest of the song's lyrics into account, that the love mentioned throughout the album has been a burden, a heavy load. And at that moment he has decided to depart from that love--the actual relationship or memory thereof--and 'unloading' the burden so that it no longer weighs on him. As he says in the final verse, "This is not the sound of a new man / Or crispy realization / It's the sound of the unlocking and the lift away"
Now let's compare that to this:
"But isn't this a beach?
And if I know one thing at all
Is I cannot just be a peach"
Bit of a difference in quality, perhaps?
