"The debut is underrated because it's not bad. (Low scores on rym)"
I love that one. And Geek is pretty alright.
I've been meaning to check the rest of their EPs, they're in dire need of love.
"is that most people looking for that pre-shoegays stuff"
This is probably closer to the truth. Dunno about "knowledgeable" though.
I love that goth shit, even the not that great stuff, so maybe I'm numb to it.

yea dude like
this site reserves those kinds of ratings for truly bad stuff
and i dont see how you can argue that those are geuninely bad at all

most listeners didn’t bother to look back that far & ended up rating their discog on how much something isn’t “loveless”
|
| |
upon hearing this i found a need to take long sabbaticals from it not to keep it fresh but to avoid that whole “this ain’t loveless” syndrome as i found for me personally that extended beyond simply shoegaze & the adjacent
|
| |
oh hey that’s a stellar & pivotal electronic album but it ain’t “loveless” so

"what do you mean [you] people"
Sorry for generalizing, apologies.
"most listeners didn’t bother to look back that far & ended up rating their discog on how much something isn’t “loveless”"
I kind of have to agree with this. Back in 1985 I can see them not being liked very much (or at least not popular), but now? It's either that or a bad case of going with the crowd.
"this site reserves those kinds of ratings for truly bad stuff"
Well most of the ratings on those early ones are older, so I think it was "cool" to hate them.
Not everyday someone can 2.0 my bloody valentine.
(sitcom-style, comedically-timed Ghandhi entrance)

> most listeners didn’t bother to look back that far & ended up rating their discog on how much something isn’t “loveless”
yeah this does in fact happen on the internet... i thought rym would be more immune due to the difference in active users

i had that fanatic need to listen to everything they ever did & appreciated & enjoyed their releases to varying degrees but man it’s tough to find examples of a band where each release you can literally feel it inching closer & closer towards their definitive statement
|
| |
think liz harris has that effect on me regarding how much her work seems to lead up to & propel forward from “dream loss/alien observer” though maybe that is also a case for the formlessness or more impressionistic nature of the music which that logic can be applied to my bloody valentine’s situation as well

"i had that fanatic need to listen to everything they ever did"
Pretty much my music-listening life these days.
Except for mbv apparently, really should fix that.
"it’s tough to find examples of a band where each release you can literally feel it inching closer & closer towards their definitive statement"
I know I'm in the minority here, but I enjoy listening to demos or forgotten releases cause I like lo-fi stuff. Bands don't usually build off their sound with the expectation that they'll have a definitive statement. Sounds like torture.

Shame you don't like metal, plenty of demo only bands, some of which quite interesting
|
| |
it’s aesthetic preference & ain’t nothing wrong with that
|

for instance casavir hates “loveless” but loves their ep compilation so it depends on what you are looking for

hes a weird sort much as i love him
also the EPs are strong dude! you made me realise in particular
|
| |
also in terms of building towards a definitive statement i would say that mbv weren’t trying to record a definitive statement but when they did it hit so hard that it was difficult to follow up on though shields kept recording music after that because he had more things to explore which is a shame because i appreciate his love for jungle music but find that on this release the songs that you can sense his touching towards said genres particularly in their percussion to be the tracks that i don’t enjoy as much as the others

yea the comp is great
|
| |
the eps are certainly strong & you can hear a more direct fleshed-out sound in them where you may not hear so much in “loveless” because of the sound approach
