well if that's true, i am glad they separated it into its own track instead of including it with either Fossil or Swim. i skip it every time.

Desert of Song rules. I wasn't sure at first, but yeah... this is now a 4.5. The entire thing, especially when compared to Colors, is a lot more discordant/dissonant/otherwordly (and not just because of the audio clips; scales, progressions, everything), whereas Colors was very consonant; almost symphonically orchestrated at times. The albums really don't sound that similar.
Can't update my rating on an iPhone. Ugh.

fair enough. Oh and the best part is the ending in Fossil

oh come on, Colours is way more dissonant than this. This actually has normal note choices and chords.

I agree with Hitman; I've had the beginning and end part of Disease stuck in my head for months since I got the album...I love that whole song (especially the crazy bass part) but those two sections are freakin' catchy :P

I'd say the only down parts of the album is the middle section of Swim...it seems like there's a huge chunk of that song where I kinda zone out and forget...but other than that I actually really like Desert of Song...

I present a short compare and contrast of tonality between Colors and the The Great
Misdirect.
Example one: jazzy clean solo over an acoustic chord progression.
Location: 3:51 - 4:31 on 'Desert of Song', 10:45 - 11:25 on 'Ants of the Sky'
On 'Ants of the Sky', Dustie uses a C#m to A chord progression (in standard tuning, I can't be
bothered to transpose) while Paul does a strictly C# pentatonic and A major scale - consanance -
and when the song makes its awkward transition into a major progression (B, Bb/B, G#m, F#; again
in standard tuning), Paul's lead work stays in the B major scale (with one or two jazz scale notes,
but they're hardly dissonant) and remains completely melodically neutral. In 'Desert of Song',
however, the chord progression is immediately a rather sour, confusing concoction (the song has E
and Em in near contrast and the Cmaj7/G - Asus4b6 juxtaposition makes it phrygian I believe - I
could be wrong, it's been a while since I learned my modes). Paul's solo in 'Desert of Song' does
not abide to a specific scale, by my observations, but it moreso follows the chord progression
and changes with each respective chord change.
Listen and you'll hear the drastic difference. I know this is just one moment in a million on both
respective albums, but I'd rather not type out an entire theory summary on both albums. I can find
a few more instances... such as the symphonic part of 'Ants of the Sky' in contrast to the opening
lead riff of 'Swim to the Moon', or how about the entire ending of Fossil Genera - very
deliberate and strange melodic choices in contrast to the consonant arrangements on 'Foam Born
A: The Backtrack'.
bloc will understand my perusing were nobody else to! FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

nick greer wouldn't be uncertain about the phrygian mode, i can tell you that much!

oh shite, you are actually right; the solo in Ants seems much more cozy because it's keeping within the same key as the backing chords.
and since the Desert solo doesn't follow the backing chord and key changes, it has a much greater impact and it grabs your attention. you pretty much forget about every other instrument except that lead guitar.
but in MY defense, i don't listen to Desert of Song very much so nyah nyah.

Maybe I'll just write a review in that form, hitman, haha. Over my dead body (O-ver-my-bo-dyyyyy!). I listened to Disease's opening part over and over while buying coathangers today.

Just got back from the House of Blues-Chicago. AWESOME, AWESOME show. BTBAM metaphorically tore the roof off and they would've done it literally had they played Mordecai and/or Selkies, but great show nonetheless.
Now I can finally die happy!
Nevertheless, California here I come! BAD RELIGION is next.....
