The more I listen to albums from the realms of Jazz and Electronic preceding this, the more I find this album less impressive. Indeed it is commendable how a band who just released one of the greatest rock albums ever (OK Computer) were so bold as to release an album that if not executed properly would have been career suicide. However, the jazz tendencies are perfected on the alternate songs recorded during these sessions (Amnesiac) and the remaining electronic songs leave a bit to desire. That is NOT to say that some of the songs here aren't impressive; Everything in its Right Place, Optimistic, and Idioteque themselves are modern masterpieces. However, the whole idea of technology taking over everyday life is a concept already perfected on OK Computer and the whole adding electronics and distorted vocals into the concept was already perfected on Kraftwerk's The Man-Machine. The rest of the songs besides the three I previously named become rather underwhelming in the album's context once the shock of the album wears off. rHowever, what really brings down the rating of this album, for me, is The National Anthem. If I wanted to hear seemingly aimless brass instruments perform dissonant solos, I would listen to Bitches Brew or Ascension.
