Hetfield isn't a brilliant lyricist on any record, man. It's just very basic messages put into even more basic rhyme structures. There is little to no artistic merit. The quality in MoP is what they do with the genre compared to other stuff, and none of that is to do with the words.

No it isn't, because the Beatles, at their best, were great lyricists. They always kept it relatively simple but there is genuine poetic quality in songs like Eleanor Rigby, A Day in the Life and Rocky Raccoon etc. Characterisation, complex ideas, imagery and rhetoric. I don't analyse lyrics to any great degree, but bands like Metallica have never used lyrics in the forefront of their style - they're more an accompaniment, something to latch onto while you headbang.
