The themes of RV make it classic Row, albums are 'things' man the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Theres books with chapters that are total dross but the story and how its executed is what its all about.

^Nice way of putting it. RV adds something to the album, I will say. It gives a listener a short breather between two of the album's very best songs. On the other hand, I may be the only person on this thread that legitimately likes RV...

@Rowan regarding Bungle not plucking your heartstrings, personally I find Retrovertigo, Pink Cigarette, Dead Goon, After School Special and Merry Go Bye-Bye (its ending) just as emotional as Just A Man etc, if not more so. Different strokes though

It's not that I don't find parts of Bungle songs emotional as such, and you've given some great examples there, I just find none of them hit me quite the way Just A Man does, because that song really gets me.

Bungle has emotionally effective parts, but far less often than FNM. This isn't a good or bad thing it just is.

I love RV as well, the lyrics are dark and self loathing true, but the delivery is what is truly special. The juxtaposition of the care-free and flawlessly intertwined guitar and piano lines with the un-melodious and banal vocals creates the perfect atmosphere of the horrors of daytime t.v.

This album and King for a Day... pretty much rival Mr Bungle for me.

No need to pit them against each other, they can co-exist quite happily.

Honestly, I'm surprised ppl don't compare Tomahawk and FNM more often.

Tomahawk is a bit more inconsistent. I have the s/t 4.5 and this year's release at a 4 (and I think it won't make the cut for my AOTY list).

I dig but dude, your missing out.

@lil: yes, the new Tomahawk is way under their normal standards, but those 1st 3 albums are all spectacular in their own unique ways.

I see this thread has been steadily bumped in my 15 hour absence from this site. That's a good thing.
