"The thing is, I also kind of don't want Tool to release another record either though lol. I am afraid it will be as middle of the road as this one and it's not something I would want added to what was otherwise a near perfect discography (with the exclusion of this ofc)."
That's what makes comebacks so dicey when you've already had a great run in the past. If it flops, then it'll always be remembered as that unwanted appendage ruining an otherwise awesome body of work. Granted, I don't necessarily think FI belongs in that category, and there are a few comebacks out there that have been fantastic (Carcass' Surgical Steel is one of those imo). But as cynical as it sounds, I'd say at least a good 60-70% of comebacks are disappointments

It's not even just comeback albums, for most bands past a certain stage they just start declining artistically with each record. It may take them 4 records, 3 records, for some it lasts just 1 lol. I think knowing when to stop before you tarnish your legacy and smear your discography with mediocre output is one of the most valuable qualities a band can have, because decline is guaranteed for virtually every artist at some stage in his career. To me there's something particularly great about those that manage to stop before they produce a record of middling quality.

Does it bug anyone else how the drums on FI (song) during the second half are on a completely different sounding kit to the first half? The toms sound like ass. I read danny did it on a giant ludwig kit from his youth. It just sounds weird to me. Still love that song tho

the flattest sounding moment in tool's discography = the slow power chord bits in pneuma

It's passionate discussion! By the way, Tool just announced that they will be playing Undertow in its entirety on their next tour...

I was just mad that Tool didn't exclusively play Meshuggah songs when I saw them

Maynard sounds fantastic on here and Eat the Elephant, aside from the lack of intensity or singing in the range he can't pull off anymore. Which is out of his control, so what can ya do.

Oof Eat the Elephant might actually be more boring than this imo
And he should just BE younger. I'm getting older, but I'm also not in a band so I have an excuse.
