Undertow's in the bottom half of the discog for me, but I do enjoy its aggression and intensity compared to later Tool albums

I love it, but it's just pure lunacy to think it's better than this. And the only reason it's rated higher is because all the hater ratings come right here to this album.

>it's just pure lunacy to think it's better than this
Or, you know, a nuanced appreciation of better songwriting and production xx

Tbf, I only think Undertow is marginally better than this. Those three middle albums though, those are where it's at :]

Ever wonder why they pretty much stay away from that album in their live show?

I mean, I don't always see that as a valid point. Hell, I would LOVE to see RHCP perform songs from their debut album live, but I know damn well that's never going to happen despite how much I like that album. Just because the band doesn't like an album doesn't mean the fans don't. That's pretty much me with 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit by Bon Jovi

Poor examples. There are 3 singles off of Undertow. You're lucky if you get 1 of them. Peppers were a completely different band after those first few records. And 7800, really????

They might be poor examples to you, but that's why it's subjective. A lot of people still hold early Tool in extremely high regard, especially the people who were more into the alt metal sound than the prog metal sound. Personally I'm more of a prog guy and so I gravitate more toward Lateralus, but I can totally see why people still enjoy Tool's earliest work. The way they struck a balance between alt and prog elements back then is pretty cool, and I'd even argue they pioneered that genre blend in general

I mean, that 2 is kind of silly tho Lucca. You're in the bottom 10% of ratings, which include the salty boys. You, my friend, are not a salty boy. My rating for this has fluctuated beyond belief, and it's at a 4.5 right now because I just saw em live. Live performances usually have that effect on me.
It will always be a solid 4 for Pneuma, Invincible, Descending, and 7empest - for me.

A 2 is a bit low, as mentioned before this is more like a 3 when I actually listen to it
I am just sad that I never think about it and Tool is like top 5 bands for me and all of their other albums are so goddamn memorable, so I don't really want to raise it
The main reason I've been on this thread so often now is because I just saw them live/was just about to see them live

Pneuma, Invincible, and 7empest are definitely the songs that keep the score relatively high for me, especially Invincible which is actually one of my favorite Tool songs now. I think Descending is fine, though I would have liked a few more vocal sections to break up the instrumental passages in the second half; then the t/t and Culling Voices are easily the two weakest for me. In fact, the reason I don't play this album from front to back as much as some of the other Tool records is because I don't feel like sitting through the t/t to get to Pneuma, lol
