The underground rock scene did not implement the seismic cultural shift that Nirvana managed more or less single handily.
There was a reason for that.
Nevermind was mind blowing.

Different world.
It was the whole picture, everyone into the same band at once, they'd appear on all the shows you'd watch, you'd buy Kerrang or Raw magazine and read all the interviews...they changed the entire mainstream youth culture overnight.
I guess that would be a bad thing if the music was awful and they had nothing to say....but in fact the music just resonated instantly and they had a lot to say.

I think so now unfortunately, I was reasonably optimistic before.
Saw a quote recently where someone said 'in retrospect, the day the internet was created authoritarianism became an inevitability'.
The internet has been enjoyable to a large extent up to this point but now it is pretty obvious what comes next. The autonomy and freedom of the lower classes of society has been a historical anomaly and one about to be reset...hopefully not but everything points that way.
The '90s was the last true era of freedom, embodied by Nirvana...some hyperbole but there we go. Maybe some pasta.
'Ok Computer' put up a sign post for this future.

That Facebook doc was the moment my relationship with the internet changed.
It wasn't that I didn't know what was possible.
It wasn't that I didn't think things had already happened.
It was that it was the main drive of Facebook now and it was engineered to do these things.
I'd have deleted Facebook but it is attached to other site logins I use (my mistake) but I certainly don't visit it or post anything there now.
The way software could ascertain your mood patterns from scrolling patterns and then change what you'd look at...just hilariously dystopian. let alone them selling off your data to whoever.
Load of bollocks.

I was never having any of it. Friends Reunited put me ill at ease.
Created a Facebook account but never went on it.
Dipped into Twitter but deleted my account years ago.
No social media at all.
Sput is my only internet portal.

I'm quite pleased that despite being forced to be sat at a screen seven or eight hours a day for work I'm starting to move totally away from being online after that. My screen time is right down.
Got a CD player again, I'm going to slowly move away from streaming so much too.
Wouldn't be surprised in 7 or 8 years as I start winding down work if I'm not living a bit like in the '90s again :D

Very strong choice mate, wish I'd have worked that out...I resisted Faceboook but my gf at the time said it was a non negotiable for the way the world was going. She left me 18 months later anyway...she left me with Facebook lol
The next gf insisted on instagram and twitter but I never got into those.
The wife isn't a screen time person god bless her! More likely she'll have a go at me for being online.

Facebook is abhorrent.
Never liked it - I had an account but I deliberately locked myself out of my account a few years ago and I haven't logged in since.
