yeah tde has been a complete shitshow since at least 2018. hit the jackpot with black hippy, sza and isaiah and then proceeded to fuck all of them over except kendrick and have signed basically zero artists of note for 10+ years now

lmao did not know she was tde
interested to find out (if ever) who the artists are in the allegations. widely believed one of them is isaiah. a lot of people speculating reason too.
lastly... it kinda is 'they kinda like us'. kendrick had all the tde guys in that video... and while much has been made about the dr dre connection, i had completely forgotten kendrick threatened to take his music off spotify if they removed r kelly and xxxtentacion's music years ago.
kendrick is my goat but "not like us" is purely a drake diss. i'm done pretending its anything grander than that.

idk, I still think "Not Like Us" is an important song that gets at something a lot bigger than Drake. Kendrick not being perfect doesn't change that. People point the pedophile stuff in Not Like Us because they are the flashy lines that stick with you, but I think the colonizer verse is the real meat of the song and more or less the thesis of the entire beef. I also think that he's been pretty open about wanting there to be path to learning/healing/redemption, and I think Drake in particular pisses him off because he is so popular despite being the exact opposite of what hip-culture has been or aspirational in that sense. Maybe I'm glazing though.
I do find there to be plenty of Kendrick stuff worth criticizng. The NOI stuff is weird and forcing Kodak Black was uncomfortable, on top of his R Kelly/XXXtentacion praise. I don't know how much he knew with this TDE stuff either, but it's not a good look.

Seems like it’s Top’s sons who are wiling the most, just first generation nepobaby shit. I wish money didn’t immediately corrupt a lot of people but it is what it is.
I do think that it is important to note that if R Kelly’s music got removed and literally most classic rock/pop groups remained on streaming, that is a straight up racial thing. So standing up to “separate the art from artist” being strictly for white people is very different than say… standing up for R Kelly as a person. But that’s a distinction that will be lost on legit every Drake fan

There definitely is a double standard. The fact that Anthony Kiedis admitted to banging a 14 year old and people never called for a boycott is wild. I loved R. Kelly's music growing up but I can't look at it the same cuz he wrote about his dirt in his songs. Totally agree w your point botb

wouldnt a better way to address that then be to call for the removal of rhcp and other white problematic artists instead of acting like x and r kelly are just a "shit happens" kinda thing then? i get where hes coming from but if we're specifically railing against the double standard, not holding anybody up to any standard isn't really a great solution

Yeah, the censorship of artists who have proven to be monsters is kind of a messy thing.
On one hand, these people fuckin suck and I hate that they still profit off their music that people hold in high regard.
On the other, it does often seem like racial biases make these censorships more of a selective witch hunt.
This certainly isn't an issue I would lead with navigating, but it is there. Still, Kendrick does deserve some scrutiny for the framing of it.

“The fact that Anthony Kiedis admitted to banging a 14 year old and people never called for a boycott is wild”
Kiedis is a case of the cycle continuing - he lost his virginity to his father’s girlfriend at age 12, that’ll fuck you up for life. Not that it’s any justification, but there’s a clear correlation.

I get he grew up in shitty circumstances for sure but it's still crazy that there's hardly any backlash. I would like to see everyone's shitty behavior held to the same standards and consequences but that's a way too idealistic way of thinking. Music industry will historically excuse people's awful behavior as long as there's money to be made

I agree with almost everything said. The whole removal of x/kelly and not pieces of shit like Nugent or Kiedis… yeah. But the counterpoint to that, and this is something I’ve pointed out so many times in other threads… the amount of money that artists make off streaming is so insignificant that I do not feel bad about listening to any music made by problematic people. Deathspell Omega might really be my favorite extreme metal band of all time, them having an insane literal Nazi in there will not stop me from listening to some of my favorite records of all time.
Just don’t buy music or merch if you really want to take a stance. Which is pretty much what I do.
