no one else is really doing actual 70s rock + death metal, the ones that are closer are Opeth clones.

the thing is theyre not rly doing them together, just shifting from one to the other within the same recording, and both dm and 70s rock have been done individually umpteenth times

I am surprised, a Smok rating that is close to accurate...

Yeah I mean regardless of who is doing similar things/similar things better, this is significantly flawed and choppy. I've been thinking of lowering to 3.0. Hidden history and (especially) starspawn are so much better

accurate ford + smok takes with the caveat that this still has enough showmanship for most of those car crash traditions to be entertaining

I am with you on this one too, Henry T., this sounds rushed, especially the DM parts are rather mid, parts don't seem to combine well. Besides there other albums I also clearly prefer Timewave Zero above this one as that one as a coherent vision executed flawlessly.

Obliquity of the ecliptic is their best song which is kind of crazy that they fumbled the bag this hard when the blueprint was right there.

i still maintain that the death metal parts on this were retroactively added when they saw the backlash to timewave and panicked.

No, Opeth is now a different band (lazy). I wouldn't even use the words Opeth and clone in the same sentence.

And there are plenty of better bands doing the 70s prog w metal....Bedsore, Morbus Chron, Obliteration, Nocturnus....it's always been there in death metal tbqh. I find albums like this, especially Opeth's new album, do not know how to balance elements but instead ham-fist them together.

I wouldn't say this album goes nowhere because the dm parts still kick ass and the proggy parts are a good listen. They need to focus on gelling the parts together.
