“Lyrics are for nerds tbh” don’t see how wanting to have a deeper emotional connection to an album by reading the lyrics makes you a nerd

lyrics are cool and all, but if a dude sings completely unintelligibly I reserve my right not to care about them
and yeah anyone who doesn't consider themselves a nerd and is actively commenting on this website, you should consider twice

okay, after a (admittedly fleeting) bit of research I can divulge that the lyrics are indeed a tier above a lot of nonsense spouted in DM, as I prefer a slightly more abstract approach vs being too 'on the nose' or unnecessarily vulgar. I still reserve the right to continue not really caring they exist because this ain't a poetry class
thank you for your time

Lyrics can increase enjoyment of the music. I listen to Cannibal Corpse a lot during exercise and I like to grunt along to MAKE THEM SUFFER, MAKE THEM SUFFER, for example.

More of a geek than a nerd. A nerd is the type of person to tell the teacher that they’re supposed to hand out homework while a geek is just a normal person that has interests in niche topics

@Jurtz plus lyrics are a good way in recognising how good a band is. The best bands have great lyrics, generic bands have generic lyrics, and the worst bands have Tom MacDonald level lyrics

Don’t know a single band with great lyrics that are genuinely bad or even mediocre musically

there's some correlation, particularly within certain genres, but it's in no way an absolute or linear
plenty of great artists have fairly average (at best) lyricism

Yeah. But when I look at my favourite artists (neurosis, ruins of beverast, swans) their lyrics are peak

A lot of lyrics in metal are subpar. There are exceptions however.

“Lyrics in metal are worthless.“
Disagreed. While not essential for me to love an album, it can boost the experience of a record since it’s engraved in the storytelling aspect of it which is also conveyed in the music. An album that has poignant lyrics that compliments the music is far more compelling than an album with horrible lyrics but great music since the narrative that the music is attempting to portray is far less meaningful and coherent with poor lyrics, thus effecting the emotional journey of the record. This trait is more pronounced in hip-hop rather than the average death-metal record, but in a way, that lack of an interesting or unique emotional narrative dulls the genre. One of the things that makes instrumental music particularly compelling is that it’s still telling a story even without lyrics, it’s just up to the listener to fill in the blanks. Yet a lot of metal and music in general is surface level in what it attempts to convey to the listener narratively speaking. For most people, this isn’t a problem but for someone who aims to get the most out of a record, it is.

Not all lyrics have to be deep and meaningful. Really if it just fits with the music perfectly (e.g. pierced from within) that’s fine too.

I'm here for the brain melting instrumentation in this case, thank you
