I really hate this when I think about how good their last outing was.

Hardwired I felt was somewhat disappointing, but it's crazy how much better it is than this.
Let alone Death Magnetic - it's considered an average Metallica record, but the quality in relation to this is night and day, it might as well be a different band. Like it's almost unthinkable that this is the same group of musicians that did the Day That Never Comes.

i feel like i hear zero artistic progression or anything like super essential to hear if you have already heard the rest of this band's discog
it's the epitome of autopilot

i still dont think this is that bad at all. i mean half of Hardwired's songs have the same main riff. sounds like James wrote that album with a gun to his head, and the fact that it took 8 fucking years??? you'd think it took 8 hours to write that album. this is at least, like, "hey, nobody gives a shit anymore so we're gonna worship the music we grew up on."
but outside of "spit out the bone" and some half-decent tracks like "moth into flame", there's nothing noteworthy on hardwired. disc 2 of that album is so fucking boring. this one has some fun riffs and licks, and it's nice that metallica FINALLY realized it's okay to make songs under 5 minutes long.

This is a lot easier to listen to in its entirety than Hardwired agreed
The clue was in the name, that one was a hard listen, even if wired

first half of hardwired goes pretty hard, just so long. i should revisit been a long time since i listened in full. moth into flame easily the best song of the last two.

@nickslip
Fucking spot on. If I’m being honest Death Magnetic is probably my fourth favorite Metallica. They actually sound hungry there and are playing like they got something to prove.

DM is very flawed imo. Has lots of cool stuff but it’s way too overlong. Seriously an album that would be a full star higher for me if every song had 2 minutes trimmed. Also im salty that clunky garbage like “the judas kiss” made the cut but not “rebel of babylon” which is one of the best songs post-80s

oh yeah don't really disagree but that's been a problem forever with them lol. all nightmare long is one of my fav metallica songs, day that never comes is up there too.

“Also im salty that shit like “the judas kiss” made the cut but not “rebel of babylon””
Hate Train and Hell and Back are solid too. Judas Kiss, Broken Beat, and Scarred, and Unforgiven 3 should’ve been scrapped for those 3

Ngl replace the weakest 4 with the entire Beyond Magnetic EP and that album becomes a 4.2/5 for me

I hate all of the production on every 21st century metallica album so far. Someone please show James Hetfield his Mesa boogie again
