@PortalofPerfection You don't get it. My issue is that it's pseudo lo-fi... It's not a proper a lo-fi release, he just wanted to sound as if it was lo-fi but he made it with modern means and it souns fake and plastic instead of an actual grim and brutal release.

it's clearer than his actual lo-fi releases though. in the context of his discog, it's pretty balanced and clear to reflect the modern creation, but it's still distant and lo-fi enough to fit with his back catalogue. I don't think it would work otherwise.

this is exactly my issue. whether you call it clear by lo-fi standards or not, it's rather clear he just threw hard EQ scoops on it for like... no benefit. if a musician is capable of better mixes without sacrificing anything, i don't understand why you'd intentionally make your album worse. i understand stylistic choices but without the harsh eq scooping and muddled layers i'd enjoy this immensely more. it'd be a cool feature of the recording if it were simply a product of its recording environment, but this isn't the case, and that to me leads me to the 'cosplaying' feeling. doesn't feel right.

to be clear i get the appeal of something like this... the hypnotic, dirging obscurity is probably alluring. it just does absolutely nothing for me and for me to enjoy lo-fi it needs to be a product of circumstance, not a stylistic choice at the mixing board.

"without the harsh eq scooping and muddled layers i'd enjoy this immensely more"

and that's where we differ ¯_(ツ)_/¯ it's not like he just scooped and distorted the guitars. the mix overall is ethereal, layered, and cloudy. new things appear the more you listen, like passing spectres in the song's landscape. it sounds like being surrounded by swirling snow and ice, with the dark trees and distant citadel just visible as silhouettes. the point isn't to hear everything immediately, it's to be immersed in that netherworld described in the project's overarching story, and to let the ghosts of melody and percussion come to you the more you allow it to sweep you away. that's what sets Paysage apart from the beginning -- it's not just recorded like crap a la Rhinocervs for a "kvlt" aesthetic, it's legitimatelly an out-of-body musical experience if you dive into what I believe is a very purposeful method of mixing and creation.

Man it's a broken autumn here in France, 22° with blue skies and sun. I want my shit weather and the good music that goes with it.

@sevengill it's not that i don't think what you said has merit, of course. it's just for me the final result isn't sonically pleasing and it doesn't inspire me to even try to decipher the layers past what i can hear on a cursory listen. nothing draws me and nothing makes me *want* to be drawn in by it. it's just not my bag or what i look for in black metal, that's rather clear.

Honestly, I don't think there are that many layers to this. Most of the different layers/melodies can be deciphered within the first listen. Guitar tracks may be layered multiple times over to get that wall of sound though

ya I totally understand not digging it. there's probably a lot of headcanon I've created, too. (this one doesn't have quite the same mystery as Winterkaelte or the S/T either, hence 4.5 instead of the classic status.)

@sevengill

I think I'm just so accustomed to this style that I pick out the layers immediately lol. I'm sure others that aren't atmo black/paysage fans probably don't on first couple listens

I like this production more than almost all his other records just because you can actually hear what the drums are doing. That and the synths are like perfectly just under the mix so they just barely peek through at you
