deftones are probably in my lifelong top 10 most listened to bands and i have never once thought chino was a good singer lmao. his screams used to be pretty dope but save a handful of songs werent anything crazy and are completely completely gone now

think the one thing chino has over all his copycats is his vocals have a very clear and distinct personality to them and is just completely unmistakable.
really like this band but like there's a thousand dudes who can do the clean vox on this album... while i don't think anyone can do chino's parts quite like he does. clear as day nearly every time someone tries to cover a deftones song

I don't think Chino is trying to "mask" anything by leaning on performance (as in putting in effort to sing the words in a way that conveys a particular headspace or attitude) vs raw note-hitting singing ability, Carpenter's no Randy Rhodes but who's asking lol
