I finally gave the whole thing a listen. Definitely enjoy this musically more than most of their past material. I don't think I'll ever get past the vocals though. On songs like It's Only Smiles, or the verses of Garden in the Bones the vocalist sounds like an uptalking valley girl. There are a number of other moments like that and it just makes me want to turn the album off immediately. His harsh vocals have improved though, and some of the cleans where he's pushing his voice more sound fine as well.

As a fashion statement, this album carries a certain come-what-way affability but both the strength and nature of that statement are incompatible with the concertedness of the compositions and as such Periphery IV: Hail Stan falls short on conceptual grounds. This is a shame, because with a stronger platform the band's future-mythos of a lizard Apocalypse could have made for great intrigue.
