I Know The End warrants at least a 4 sputnik average.

Ahem* Jeff Rosenstock is still sitting at a lovely 4 with nearly 300 ratings :p

Listen, I'm not saying I won't 5 it - because I might - but basically if an album isn't a woke hip-hop societal statement or metal album of the century, it's tough to maintain an average over a 4.
Edit: touche Lucman. I know I'm being hyperbolic, but you all get what I mean. Usually the AOTY sits around a 3.8-4.1 these days. When I first joined everyone was more on the same wavelength - the "classics" were 4.3's and 4.4's. Now, the site's taste has really diversified which is a strength but also makes cohesive opinions harder to come by.

Some poeple just 1 overhyped albums out of spite, or for fun (whatever joy you can find in that tho (shrug)), so that usually brings the avg down after some time.

Yeah, it is pretty clear that the big hype train records that aren't Ulcerate really struggle to keep a high average. For Phoebe, I can imagine a ceiling of 3.6-3.9.

"The average will start at like a 4.6 and then by August it'll be a 3.7."
I'd normally agree with you but this album's avg has been steadily growing since it dropped, so this new one might end up high than it seems

But then there may be those who see how milquetoast it is and give it a 2.5. That's gonna be the deciding factor I reckon.

I just checked the streamed version of I Know the End, and sure is a nice song.
Gonna check the singles next.

Yep, the anti-hype crowd is a real factor as well. I know I was being silly before, but this is more seriously how things usually shake out for albums with a substantial number of ratings (100+):
4.5+ - Nearly extinct, reserved for your all-time greats. This is the OK Computer/Wish You Were Here tier.
4.3-4.4 - You can find these more often, but they're still rare. A lot of sputcore classics land in this tier: TDAG, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Carrie & Lowell, TPAB, etc. If something has a 4.3-4.4 avg, you can bet that it was most likely AOTY for its respective year.
4.0-4.2 - A common average to find for the year's top 10-or-so albums. These are your Black Mile to the Surface's, Science Fiction's, etc. Not necessarily all-time greats or even AOTY's, but highly revered albums that most likely had a 4.7 avg or something ridiculous at first.
3.7-3.9 - This is the core center of "really good" - albums that could be in the end of year discussion but maybe had their share of detractors or met a little too many doof's, zak's, and pika's along the way.
3.5-3.6 - This is the "thanks for the rec - I gave this a 3.5 to seem appreciative" category. You can usually enjoy albums with this average but they're nothing special.
3.0-3.4 - The forgotten but listenable. Quality here ranges from downright abysmal to very underrated.
1.0-2.9 - Absolutely reprehensible trash, kill it with fire and then repent to the deity of your choice.

seems like it usually takes a few years for the collective to deem an album a classic. when was the last time the site immediately and (mostly) uniformly agreed that an album warranted more than a 4.3? not asking rhetorically, i'm genuinely not sure.

2015 had two of them - Carrie & Lowell and TPAB. By year's end they were both 4.3+. Didn't take years to get there.
