"I think most of the higher ratings for this album are from those who got into Opeth after or during Ghost Reveries."
Why during? GR and this have totally different styles

Its a shame that the same album that has The Ward, a really really great song, is the same album with however many other tracks that are complete bullshit

The Ward is great agreed, one of the best here. They have this annoying habit of putting my faves in the bonus material lately (Derelict Herds off GR, Face in the Snow off Heritage).
Also the final part of The Seventh Sojourn is purrrdy

Dude, that groove in the title track is a winner though

i saw them at the opera house this year and the new stuff actually sounded FAT live, but i still find this album a punish to get through. i dont mind the shorter songs, but the long ones are messy and get boring here.

For the guys who think this sucks, do you like any latter-day Opeth? When did they start sucking... The Heritage? Watershed? Earlier?
Just curious.

I personally think Deliverance is the band's worst, but idk how many people would share that sentiment

Watershed is definitely NOT when they started sucking. I mean, they still don't imo, but they have gotten dreary in comparison. Watershed was not the start of that. Even Hertiage is a unique album with a very dense atmosphere. It's just very different to their previous stuff. I'd say Heritage is the moment they "changed", but Pale Communion is the moment they lost most of their originality.
