I'LL CARRY THIS BOX TO THE PROPER PLACE
Also, I bought one of those newly released t-shirts, the SF one. I doubt they're ever coming back (after 7 years?) but their music still means a lot to me.

Hard to believe this came out 14 years ago and TDAG is closing in on 20.

A buddy of mine got a Brand New Coaster set as a gift from a friend and it slightly angered me that in the set of 4, Daisy was the album that was excluded. Wild to me that generally this is the black sheep. Easily up there with TDAG and SF. Such a grower

Honestly I think I prefer this to TDAG these days

Same, but part of it is probably because I have spun TDAG in its entirety more than any record

I'm getting into this band (better late than never huh?) and the quality jump from their sophomore to this one is outstanding. I haven't listened to TDAG yet but if this is supposed to be way worse these guys are crazy good.

this is much better than TDAG, but the quality jump between each of the sophomore thru this is pretty large

I guessed so because this is pretty darn good. If this isn't this band's best work I would be quite astonished.

I think the band gets better with every release tbh.
First one sucks, Deja has some bangers but is still too close to pop punk style shit for my taste. TDAG is amazing, this is even better, and Sci Fi is their masterpiece imo.
This is unlike anything they’ve ever done tho, Sci Fi you can at least see the growth from their earlier records.

the last two have aged by far the best fr, but between the pedestrian alt rock whateverness of Out of Mana/No Control/Waste and that awful fanservice bs on Same Logic, Sci Fi has too many potholes to be their masterpiece

damn if same logic is awful fan service then I’m a sucker for it. I love that track. Really like Waste too.

its only pothole is that it doesn't sound nearly enough like this one: Daisy (2009, Interscope)

sci fi is less consistent than this (no control sucks lmao) but its also j tryna do more stuff and that sprawl makes it infinitely more what i come back to on the rare rare occasion i want to jam them (and i think its peaks are generally higher) vs this where the back half kinda blurs and blends outside of the t/t and noro. albums kinda have opposite problems for me
both are very good, neither are a masterpiece, both smoke tdag

'pedestrian alt rock whateverness of Out of Mana/No Control/Waste'
I can (almost) understand this "criticism" (assuming alt-rock whateverness is automatically a pejorative, which...it might not be for some ppl) levied at No Control, though I've always found a certain irony to the grunginess + emo sensibilities there. But I don't see how one could apply this whispery moniker to either Out of Mana or Waste (esp. the latter) and not at least a handful of other tracks - maybe you just don't like the album that much bb.
'and that awful fanservice bs on Same Logic'

Not sure how much stake I'd put in those "private shows" tbh. Even if real, all it means is they got the itch to play some music in front of family and close friends. The band's reddit page is blowing up with theories about new music, shows, etc but I truly believe the band is done and may actually be better off that way.

Out of Mana kicks off with one of the most boring riffs of the decade and recurrently transitions back into it with all the momentum of a belly ache - extreme alt rock guitar flop energy there. Somewhat sympathetic to that one bc the bridge connects with a fair bit of heft, but otherwise its almost as much of a midtempo chore as Waste (which would be a tight piece of songwriting if it didn't focus on some of the most interchangeable lyrics in the Brand New discog and have a total dearth of good hooks)
Same Logic's BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN callback is definitive fanservice and, with that delivery, probably the single biggest cringe in their discog. Rest of the track feels corny and concerted to me, reaches back to this one with a few Deja-esque pop trappings but doesn't have nearly the same oompf
"maybe you just don't like the album that much bb"
I like the album just fine, but it's easily got its fair share of mediocre songwriting choices or plain poor judgements
