I was torn for a long time between giving this a 4 or a 4.5 but I had to go with the 4.5 because I know how much Sufjan clearly invested in it. However I don't see this ever being a 5 for me. It lacks quite enough variation, but individually the songs are just so good.

usually i would agree with you but i think the fact that the songs all have the same general sound works really well for this album

Luckily it doesn't last as long as many of Sufjan's other albums, in that case the lack of variation would hurt the album even more. Consistency is good but the songs aren't able to complement one another as well as they could if there were more variance between them. It's a minor complaint.
