Serious answer is because people have longstanding and enduring emotional and aesthetic connections with Loveless that this will understandably never be able to match bc memories and experience etc
Shit be fraught

@parks
No, most people agree that Loveless is way better than this.

ehhh not in my case. also isnt there something to be said about an album being incapable of even coming close to creating such a connection in the first place?

is that staff only or what

"what do u think of their early stuff"
I think it's good, jangly goth rock.
Now, THAT stuff is underrated.
|

"is that staff only or what"
nah, it's in the contrib wheelhouse - just tying up the odd write up and it'll be good to go!
|
| |
woah they have a lot of EPs

sandwich ive listened to that stuff again lately. i like it but im not sure why most people seem not to. my hunch was that it was not that notable for the genre/sound at the time (something possibly similar might be the case with freur and underworld's first two albums before they went electronic for instance). so thats why im asking

i tend to like contribs more than staff but
in general people tend to have huge recency bias etc
ill admit i was more guilty of that myself some years back

I probably won't like the decade list anyway. Does it have any Wadada Leo Smith, Matt Mitchell or Jute Gyte albums?

I always thought it was the opposite, kind of a trend-riding situation where they were playing goths because it was the most popular thing at the time.
I'm sure a seasoned MBV historian will say I'm wrong and cite their biography or a documentary or whatever, but no that early sound is pretty standard 1980s underground stuff.
As to why people don't like it now? No idea.
|
| |
Gonna tally up the years and make a metric to assess their correlation with placement sometime tbh, haven't noticed a huge recency bias but it'll be interesting to get some stats
And lol Ghandhi, can't confirm or deny
|

The debut is underrated because it's not bad. (Low scores on rym)

mb the reason then, is that most people looking for that pre-shoegays stuff to begin with are likely to be more discerning/knowledgeable etc and merely "pretty standard 1980s undergruond stuff" doesnt cut it for them? idk
i need to hear them some more i think
