I was the exact same in hs, Doof.

It wasn't until my late late 20s that I really started to get into their stuff.

Late 20s is sort of a second stage opening of doors.

That was me with Pink Floyd, Jazz, Death Metal.

Late 20s is when I really started branching out to genres that weren't extreme metal, hip-hop or ambient. Started getting into jazz, indie and electronic stuff around that time.

I just feel you get to a point when often the final frontier in music exploration is getting into music you dismissed too quickly or from gut reaction when younger.

It used to be that listening to new music felt dangerous as a kid but it fades....but getting into Iron Maiden, the Levellers or Simply Red as a 40 something year old is now my idea of danger lol

The next of the big beasts I’m gunning for is Morrissey…tried and mostly failed with The Smiths but I’m thinking his solo stuff. Final frontier 2026, to boldly go…

Same with mid-late 30s for me rn. Now I'm finding myself in love with so much classic prog rock, as well as ambient that I would have written off as "aimless nothing" music prob even just 5 years ago, but now my headspace is: ambient is one of the best genres of music.

Yeah hitting up a lot of other genres in my late 20s too. Never cared for the classics, but now getting into them more without finding it utterly boring, and some even amazing! However, I am still upsetting people rating most of it 3.0 to 3.5, oh well.

A lot of exploration is who you know but also other resources of music knowledge...

Teens: Kerrang, Raw, Metal Hammer, MTV Headbanger Ball etc

Early twenties: Q, NME, best albums of all time books

Mid twenties: Uncut, Pitchfork

Mid thirties: Scaruffi, Mark Prindle, Sput and RYM

Not saying these things dictated my taste but they definitely influenced it

"but getting into Iron Maiden, the Levellers or Simply Red as a 40 something year old is now my idea of danger lol"

yeah, if I'm honest with myself, the absolute hardest nuts to crack might be those artists I didn't ever appreciate in my youth. Those where you have an almost hard-wired aversion to via some association or whatever. Show me something completely new, something completely alien, coming from a totally different generation, culture or perspective, then it feels like starting at zero (as much as one can, we all have biases). Starting (again) with idk U2 (first band I thought of) might be like fighting an uphill battle just to reach zero lol

Listened to this for the first time on the way to work, and boy, it pales so hard in comparison to their classics. It's even kinda not good.
