^^basically yeah - its amazing, but its the kind of thing you give a dedicated no-distractions listen to, get completely lost in it, and then not have time to / not have the desire to listen to it frequently. If thats what you meant by that

Just finished - I definitely see why people say not to judge this on first listen because it was definitely a lot to take in and a lot of it left me kind of flat. Overall it was fine but I didn't enjoy it a whole ton, gonna hold back on more detailed comments for the time being though.

I'm not a major fan of it as a complete listen either, has some excellent stretches of consecutive tracks in there though

Thats a shame, this shook me to the core on first listen but I think I was in the perfect mood for it by sheer coincidence. Hope future listens prove more enjoyable. Do you think having heard 'A Crow Looked At Me' influenced your expectations and listening experience for this at all, despite people likely having told you they are quite different?

I did quite like the first few tracks, once the runtimes started dipping below 3 minutes it lost me a bit. But again, not going to judge too harshly right now.

Can't wait to find the time to give this a real dedicated listen. My first time through it was really interesting though and it drew me in quite a lot.

Well it wasn't a focused listen so that may have impacted my perceptions a bit, for example I didn't pay attention to any of the lyrics. As for having heard Crow first, no I don't think that really impacted my expectations at all as I have known about and been interested in listening to this for years. In fact this sounded pretty much exactly how I expected it to.

Fair play. I really do think this is a sit down and listen or don't listen at all kind of album, or at least I've personally never derived anywhere near as much enjoyment from a casual listen as I have an engaged one.

I thought the same thing about Crow at first but now I've been casually enjoying it. Sometimes though it does take some focused listens to really get into something, after that though I feel like anything that's good should still be casually enjoyable. Unfortunately, I probably won't have time to give this a focused listen for several days, I'll keep trying it though and hope it grows.
This also has a lot of competition right now as I've given out a lot of high ratings recently which may have lessened the relative impact of this.

That's all fair enough, though I would disagree in that I believe there are certain albums most suited to (and sometimes only enjoyable with) focused listens, such as this record for me and something like ladies and gentlemen... (though that I can get substantial enjoyment from a casual listen, but nothing close to what I get from a focused one). Quite envious that you can get such enjoyment from a casual listen

Certainly focused listening is the ideal way to experience albums, particularly for especially good ones, but unfortunately I have very little time for focused listening these days, so I've kind of just adapted to making the most out of casual listening. That probably means that I'm not enjoying everything quite as much as I can but it's a loss I have to take. But as I said once I've gotten past the phase where I'm still largely reacting to an album or forming initial opinions pretty much anything is easy to listen to casually, if I enjoy it that is.

Yeah sure, I've been through phases like that only to come back to the albums I tried out casually and rated poorly and realise how much I missed, so I just try avoid it with new albums and with certain select albums like this that I just can't enjoy casually. I would agree generally though that most albums that are incredible with a careful listen are still highly enjoyable with a casual one; I suppose it's just new/first listens and a few particular albums that I won't listen to casually. I'm always very impressed by an album that can be equally enjoyable casually and when focused, like most of the Springsteen and radiohead I've heard

Yeah not ruling that out lol. I'm pretty basic, I rarely end up not loving things that people who like the genres I do generally love.
