The drumming. It seemed to be dragging along behind the guitar and what not. I know they used analogue equipment which would take a toll on the production.
The bad production happens to be an aspect that I really like though. It just adds to the mood of the album.

Yeah, the drumming didn't really convince me here. Sometimes it sounded out of place, and I feel it especially in Into the Painted Grey.
The production suits on this album, nothing bad to say about that.

Thats one of the worst parts I think.

If all their albums had this production it wouldnt be so bad. But it just sounds so out of place compared to their other albums.

Yeah, this was quite disappointing. A good album but a mediocre Agalloch album. I absolutely love Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires, and I enjoy Into the Painted Grey, but they're not enough to save the album as a whole. I do wonder what they could have possibly done after the towering achievement that was "Ashes"... I dunno. I was certainly hoping for something better than this.

Meh. Standing in that pantheon of oak, that citadel of stone, was way better. Anyway that fortress burned down years ago.

oh wait, that's the good album

Yeah... i am inclined to agree with a few points here with regards to the lack of cohesive direction but I've seen that rear its head in all of their releases at some point. I love the production on this album and with the exception of maybe "Bloodbirds" from "Ashes..." I think "Into the Painted Grey" is the best track they've ever written! .... except for the solo... no so good there.

Idk what the hell the author who wrote the review means when he says that Marrow of the Spirit is the weakest Agalloch album yet. Agalloch keeps their traditional sound alive but kicks it up to a whole new level, especially in songs like Into the Pained Grey, Black Lake Nidstang, and To Drown. Don't be so quick to critique, cause you'll fail.
