Both are great but yeah how do you not dig Petrucci's 100 nps (notes per second)

Don't you mean his nips?? Heh

Tbh, I'm not a fan of Petrucci's lead playing at all. Not a popular opinion ofc, but idk, his playing just doesn't click with me.

@Wadlez lol he's probably had more than that
|

you gotta give him some credit danny, how often do you get to see a bear shred on guitar?
|

I'm gonna bypass argument and just say that that was a cool move Lloyd.

"I feel DeGarmo had more feeling in his leads than Petrucci, but obv that's not gonna be a popular opinion."
Yeah it's not going to be a popular opinion especially with regard to THIS album. Petrucci's guitar work here slays.

"IMO this is a decent enough prog metal album with decent enough jams good enough for a couple listens now and again."
Yet you 4'd it, a 4 isn't "decent enough".
|
| |
It is in my book. Can't 3.5 it because that says to me "this is quite flawed", and I can't 4.5 it because that'd say "this rules". So it stays a 4.
It's more or less the same reason why I have Nirvana's Nevermind and Yes's Close to the Edge 4'd. They're respectable albums, but nothing I'd go crazy for.

I prefer DeGarmo to Petrucci as well. Theres just something about his playing I really love.

@SitarHero agreed, this is definitely his most tasteful guitar playing. Heavy riffs, melodic leads, shredding...he does it all right here.

If I 4 an album it means I fucking love it.

Nah, for me 4.5 & 5 means I fucking love the album.
A 4 just says: this is decent, or solid enough.
3.5 means it's quite flawed.
3 means it's barely good.
2.5 means it's more or less half-good.
2 and below means it sux.
To each their own ofc.

A 4 rating on here translates to excellent which is hardly decent. Decent would be a 3.

lol, get em Nero!

Nah man, I hardly take those words seriously. I just go by what makes sense to me.
5: masterpiece
4.5: near-masterpiece
4: fairly solid album
3.5: flawed album
3: barely good album
2.5: half good album
2: less than half is any good, or it sux but there are worse things
1.5: maybe has 1 good song, and that's it
1: unredeemable
That's my system ofc.

Aren't the ratings set in place for a reason? They have descriptions for each number. I thought that was the whole point of standardizing. May be wrong though.

To each their own bro. It's not like everyone will interpret paint, sounds or laws the same way.
