also, is it just me or is every single good SY track with Kim on the vocals (or maybe instrumental)

I also prefer Kim on vocals, but there are many fantastic Thurston or Lee tracks also. There's Teen Age Riot for a start. Or Tuff Gnarl, The World Looks Red, Schizophrenia, Karen Koltrane, Skip Tracer, Mote, etc. I am very biased, but the list is endless.

It is just you. Kim is amazing but Thurston has a million great tracks, too.

justice for the 5-6 GOATed Lee songs
Kim does probably has the highest hit ratio between the three though

Panty Lies might be the best Sonic Youth song I’ve heard tbh
So yeah Kim is best

Agreed, but she is also the only one with annoying vocals at times, tho.

Panty Lies is kinda cool as a throwaway novelty track, but lmfao at it even having a sniff at top-shelf Yoof
"she is also the only one with annoying vocals at times"
Thurston in kewldood ROCK mode is by far the most annoying vox they have imo (Androgynous Mind/No Queen Blues/100% -type beat). Kim was the only member who could really lay down a heavier style

I’d say some of Thurston’s songs are rather boring than annoying (junkie’s promise, most of his late-era stuff), but Androgynous Mind is a fave of mine. I’m aware I may represent a minority here, hey, hey, it’s okay.

Panty Lies is top shelf Johnny
Calling it throwaway is just a bad take
Kinda weird to think of it as novelty it’s mainly carefree brash feminist ranting in the vein of “Kissability” but like way more chaotic. Probably more punk than almost all of their other 90s output, really

While I can agree that Kim’s lows are the lowest vocally usually (Orange Rolls and Female Mechnaic on Duty) I feel like it’s because she’s the only one of them willing to take risks with their voice 90% of the time
Like Thurston’s voice is cool and all but I wish he had more dynamics to it
Like how much cooler would Disappearer or Theresa’s Sound World be if he didn’t sound like a flaccid noodle on them

Thurston did "Diamond Sea" so i forgive him for not being as good as Kim or Lee
