Private Hell is the top tier here but Lesson Learned and Check My Brain are bangers.

It's a good song but I don't think it's one of their best.

Strong riffs on that one man.

True, but literally every AiC song has strong riffs. On the all time list of AiC songs it ranks closer to the bottom than the top IMO. That isn't a critique of the song itself but a testament to how strong AiC's catalog is.

Jerry is the man m/

He is indeed. For a guy who's a pretty mediocre guitarist by pro standards he churns out some incredible riffs. m/

I do remember him saying in an interview he was at a crossroads where he could've went full on pro (technicality wise) or stick to the simple but effective riffs.

I think he chose wisely.

For sure! Him and Steven Wilson are at the top of the heap, I think, in terms of creativity trumping technicality when it comes to writing guitar parts.

Some of PT's riffs can be quite tricky I think man, certainly not simple.

That's probably true, but I think the trickiness was more because of the oddness than from the technicality. Like the main riff to Blackest Eyes. When I was trying to learn that it gave me trouble more because I struggled to understand it more than I struggled with the technical complexity of it.

I'd also put Adam Jones up there for the same reason. His riffs are also tricky because of their rhythmic weirdness rather than any kind of technical complexity.

Wedding Nails off the same album took me ages to get down, it's more the time signature they're played in though like you said.

Yeah. I suppose some would argue that writing in odd time signatures is a sign of technical ability, but Soundgarden and AiC did it pretty frequently too. And maybe the most rhythmically weird song I ever wrote was the first proper song I ever wrote, so there's that. :D

You ever tried to play any stuff off Superunknown? The guitar tunings is all over the place haha.

Ha! Yeah I learned the popular ones. I used to cover Black Hole Sun and Spoonman with my band some years ago, and I learned Fell on Black Days too. I tried learning My Wave and Superunknown, but those were weird too. I mean, My Wave sounds so simple and it's in the weirdest ass tuning.
