This whole thing about selling points and female vocals is irrelevant to Opeth.

How is this not relevant? We are simply discussing a single song that has stirred up a bit of controversy about Opeth. I believe it has alot to do with Opeth considering the path that the band has taken on this album.

it makes the transition to Heir Apparent more abrupt too, in a good way

Very much so. I just love that single doom chord that strikes the song in. Plus, the middle section that follows an acoustic passage with a sweet tom-roll pattern is immense.

I hardly think it's a "path Opeth are going to take". I also see no controversy. What, did you think Mike was going to throw his ic down for Nathalie Lorichs or something? And considering that she merely is a guest I'd say that the 'selling point' thought is no where to be seen. The song itself is could have become just another soft Opeth interlude, but became something a little different, and a radically different way to begin an album itself, as opposed to Deliverance, Ghost Reveries etc, and therefore in my eyes, as refreshing as they could have started things off.

I was kind of relating that 'path Opeth are going to take' thing to the entire album. It's not drastically different then their other stuff by any means, but its certainly a step forward in terms of any mainstream recognition. The songs are much easier to understand the first time through.
Also, your point about "the song just becoming another soft interlude tune by Opeth, but became something different" is actually quite intriguing. However, I think I will just say at this point that I simply don't care for her voice in the song. Fair enough?

I have no issues with your views. I just wanted some clarification. Fair enough indeed.

I've been listening to this since it came out and it still hasn't worn thin. I love how its all nice and gentle starting with Coil, then Heir Apparent jumps out and punches you straight in the balls.

LONG... DAYS... SO MANY YEARS TO CLEAN THE SLATE.
Or in other words, Heir Apparent is one of the best songs ever. It deserves angry caps.

"and a radically different way to begin an album itself, as opposed to Deliverance, Ghost Reveries etc"
If you're calling all other Opeth openers similar/generic, that's fine. But Opeth decided to open Deliverance with (probably) their heaviest song ever, so it is really a different way for them to start the album.

And yet you're highest rated Opeth album is 4.5. Shame on you
