On the universal scale of deftones album ratings, this is somewhere around the self titled record-- better than Ohms but not quite as good as SNW. I haven't decided if I think this is better or worse than the self-titled record.

'but Jerry Cantrell is my goat so that probably has something to do with it'

Yeah me too. Big AIC fan.

'I respect your opinion, but having ATF and Self Titled that low? And gore over them? damn, I dont know if my old heart can take it haha'

Yeah i get it. I got ATF when it came out, and whilst i liked it, it never became a classic album. I liked WP a lot more. But then self titled for me was a disappointment and i didnt really go back to the band until 2020 not long before ohms came out. Realised id been foolish missing them all. Gore sounded different and fresh to me, i actually liked the lighter production, and phantom bride blew me away. Whereas ATF still felt the same to me, real good but still that album that didnt blow me away ,and whilst i appreciate self titled way more than i did these days, still has a vibe for me of disappointment after WP?

Koi is my all time favorite but this is easily their most consistent album front to back… maybe ever tbh, not a single thing even approaching a skip. Least favorite are the first two and cut hands but it ends really strong with ~metal dream and departing the body.

Even the three I mentioned being weaker are still solid 4/5 tracks. I’ll admit this was a little underwhelming on first listen but it’s really sunk its hooks in at this point. Top 5 AOTY for me… it’s truly insane that we’re 30 fucking years out from Adrenaline and they’re still putting out top notch shit. Can’t think of a single other band with this much music and over that insane amount of time. Usually bands that have this much shit bottom out and start half assing it but not these boys. Really hope they keep it going.

Most consistent since AtF honestly

only thing that didn’t make the album completely consistent was that dumb 90s silence track

I really really hate that Damone isn’t just a separate track on Spotify man, there’s seriously probably a good chunk of newer fans that have straight up never heard that song

i realize it's not people liking deftones that annoys me so much as every band trying to sound exactly like them

They have an incredible discography. One of the best bands ever, without a shadow of a doubt.

there’s a few good ones but they had their share of copycats when they were originally huge and now that they’ve blown up again get ready for zoomer bands to start aping them too

Nothing quite like this, I think this is literally the most popular they’ve ever been. I wasn’t around during the late 90’s and early 2000’s (well I was, but I was a young little shit) but now kids younger than me are talking about how much they fuck with the band. Ever since I got into them I was always the youngest person at their shows.

It’s weird but very welcome, im happy they’re getting their flowers even if tickets cost an extra 100 dollars

misses?? There are no misses, sure some arent as good as others, but nothing is a miss for me. Locked club is probably my least favourite but its still strong.

My order

Metal Dream - Love the chorus, so good - Has mood, vibe, but still hits.

Milk of the Madonna - Killer Track. I mean theres been heaps of praise for it already.

Infinite Source - So good. So satisfying, love the melodies. Cool riffs.

Souvenir - Great moody verses, great chorus, love that instrumental outro part

My Mind is a Mountain - Almost under rated this song, it's a ripper, great opener

cXz - Real good chorus. Moody.

I think about you... - Some real good feels.

Ecdysis - Love the bass, really cool chorus also

Departing the body - Really good closer, interestingly i thought its intro would of worked better as Metal dream's outro.

Cut Hands - verse riff /melody is so so deftones. Interesting chorus, really works. Another great tune.

Locked Club - still very cool tune, cool attitude to the verses, but i just like all the others more.

And Sextape is amazing but I’ve always liked Beauty School more… but Entombed kicks the shit out of both. i think about you all the time is probably on the same level as Beauty School for me

Agreed, Beauty School is so much better than Sextape, and Entombed tops them both I think about you All the time is up there with entombed for me, definitely did start off that way though. Grew on me a lot.
