"Lol Space Jester gets it. I honestly can’t fathom how someone who likes black metal in general doesnt enjoy this."
because the production is horrible and every song is in exactly the same key which makes it seem way longer than it actually is because of no variation (and it's long enough to begin with). i don't have an issue with lo-fi but when it's just throwing a few EQ filters on it to intentionally sound crap it's just tacky.

@Sevengill To be honest Im Winterwald is my least favourite song... The "darkspacesque" synth melody in the middle of the song is out of place. It completely ruins the song imo.
I wil agree with Darknoctus. The production is utter crap. Way too forced lo-fi and a low quality at that. There are lo-fi productions that ooze of emotions but this sounds completely sterile. Also the horrible mix that makes everything sound crystal clear (for the band's standards) whereas they should sound fuzzy and distorted in conjunction with the horrible choice of drum machine makes you feel that everything is simply out of place instead of fusing into a beautiful icy mess like in previous releases.
On the other hand the album gives me the impression that all of the aforementioned apply only for the first CD of the album and that for some reason, the same recipe works better on the second half.

Well if you think about it in terms of wind , there isn’t much variation to wind. It gets fast or slow, it goes high or low, maybe it whistles here and there. Also, there’s inherently no issue with every song being in the same key, it’s just hard to pull off with how easily the listener can get bored. But he masterfully does it here.
I mean saying that produxtion of a bm album is horrible is kind of funny to me. I’ve never touched an instrument in my life except 4th grade trumpet so I don’t have the expert knowledge on production.
That said, compared to previous Paysage records , this shits practically pristine - many less layers for your ears to sift through. And the guy is a pro, I trust his judgement.
If it were any cleaner it would sound over produced to me.
Also I don’t want emotions. I want Norwegian frost biting my ears.
In this record Wintherr captures cold anger. Unlike many black metal albums where the themes are icy and frozen but the actual sound is of hot anger. A lot of bands that attempt at a bm album might as well just make a dm one cuz it just sounds like fire / furious anger.
This sounds like a deep undercurrent. Or a gust of winter air on a mountainside.

the classics def weren't made with EQ filters, so emulating that sounds feels legit in his hands

@Lichtbringer We are talking about minimalistic music here not about an Eloy album or something...

Tacky? Lol alright.

Such an awful take lol. As if being able to play well means you can’t appreciate music that isn’t technically difficult

i mean, sure, but the clearer darkspace production shows he's capable of better mixes so why intentionally make it bad? lo-fi is meaningful when it's a product of circumstance. if you're throwing EQ scoops on your music to make it sound bad intentionally... well, let's just say i'll never understand it. it feels like cosplaying lo-fi lmao
" that's why you're able to enjoy this nonsense. ignorance is bliss i guess"
so i suppose you can't dislike food without being a chef too? get outta here.
