Listened to Aenima and Lateralus last couple of days and Aenima slays Lat.
Not even close - although I will admit Lat does have some neat production tricks, a couple of swanky new guitar tones and does refine according to those blueprints established on its predecessor. Last third of Lat is totally pointless

I kinda get why you'd see their work as homogenous as a non-fan. They sure have their typical tone/identity. But in terms of general emotion, I think The Patient, Schism, Ticks & Leeches and Reflection alone are worlds apart. They're all obviously Tool, but they feel very different. Though like I said, I see why that would seem different for someone who isn't a fan.
Most bands ever are closer to being one trick ponies though. There's hardly any bands that aren't one trick ponies, honestly.

Triad is alright but sort of curry house Ministry - rest is boring light a joss stick stuff. The one about spirals is just about ok but that’s the album’s last half decent toon

‘Lateralus’ and ‘The Fragile’ were two albums I loved upon release...but as the years passed I got bored of both.
Both were more proggy, polished, produced and actually more MTV pandering in reality.
Both bands needed the bile. Other than Schism the two best tracks on Lat for me are Ticks and the Grudge...which kept the intensity.
Band just suit some bite otherwise the cynicism and ethnic vibe and quasi philosophic lyrics just fall flat for me.

Where does doof find that unwavering certainty about completely subjective things?
Is it just alcohol?

I can understand this boring some people but for me the atmosphere is nice and serene. Biggest issue is that they didn't focus more on the elements of a song like Culling Voices, and that 7empest is really the only full-on masterpiece on this album. The rest is still great, though!

It’s called expressing your opinion? You are calling someone out for explaining their taste?
Fucks sake, you can’t win here lol

I like it all, 3D. Sometimes they get on another level with those grooves and rhythms. Carey regularly makes me come.
There are some weak points, mostly in Invincible and Culling Voices.
I find it way too early to rate this, there are still many discoveries here.
Ok, it's 4 now.

Not sure where i'd rank this in their discog yet. Only things I know for sure is that it's very good, but not on the level of aenima or lateralus.

Invincible's finale is much better live, but that guitar intro man, turns me on every time...Culling is indeed my latest grower now...but was among my least faves on first listens.
