it sounds like one of those songs a gear company would just make up on the spot to show you how an instrument sounds

For sure.

On my second listen and I'm very underwhelmed. Last two minutes are pretty good, actually digging Axenrot's drumming a lot, but overall it's pretty weak imo. What happened to the creativity they showed on Heritage (bar Slither and The Lines in My Hand)?
Still think the album will be good though. Hoping this is just them looking for a bit of commercial success with their lead single.

Yeah its not as good as most of the songs on here

Axe rules as always, his playing is so tasty. starts to remind me of Gavin Harrison a bit

Stoked for the album hard anyway, there is no way the rest of it will sound like the single.

What the hell was he thinking with that chuggy riff? it's so incredibly dull.
|
| |
Sounds like something DT would do.

I think its pretty groovy, have to remember its not the studio version yet! Can hear like a funky bassline underneath the riff but its a bit too low in the mix to make out...

Something DT would do these days yeah agreed.

Ugh, now that's just fucking blasphemy.

I'm listening to it again btw, I haven't written it off. Hoping it might grow a bit but it's definitely a big disappointment.

Im a sucker for Orphaned Land so its no wonder that I like the single this much
|
| |
haha when i was listening to it the first thing i thought was "man this just sounds like a more boring dream theater song" which is almost impossible to actually pull off

The singles Opeth release tend to be some of the weaker songs on the record (e.g. The Devils Orchard, Grand Conjuration, Porcelain Heart, Burden etc.)

That's true Pleb and pretty much what I'm relying on to keep me somewhat optimistic about the album.
The only song I really like out of those is The Devil's Orchard, which was far better than this single.
