ashes definitely greater for overall playability and awesomeness of the individual songs but when this hits you hard it really hits you hard. listening to some alcest right now might have to jam this after
anyways though i'd def recommend starting with ashes. its their most accessible full length. the band has even gone so far as to say its their "pop" album which is ridiculous but they are a gang of pretentious fucks (in a good way) so yeah

In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion (might be my favorite track by any band), and The Hawthorne Passage are definitely the highlights for me on this album. Can't decide if I like this or Pale Folklore more though.

They're both perfect, so you can't go wrong either way.

Very true. I also love their other two albums that contain more post-metal to them (yes, even Marrow).
Also, check out all their E.P.'s. White Division Grey is a compilation of sorts and is also one of my favourites by this band.
