''new one is a total embrace of the heavier side of their sound, going as far into the realm of suffocating atmosphere as they can manage''
Agreed, I think the new album is their most intense one yet.

Yeah same here, but it's still their own sound.

that actually makes me think - would y'all even consider the new one black metal?

Yeahhhhh didn't find much variation though, I guess that could be considered intense but it was pretty monotonous, Ill have to give it more listens. Ulcerate and Deathspell are at their best when they stop doing blast beats and start making crazy ass twisted riffs in my opinion. I love the fast sections but I feel both bands overuse them at times.

i understand you but i think the underlying music is actually deeply interesting and i'm looking forward to more listens

Absolutely, you can really hear a lot of black metal elements even though it's a very chaotic album.

I have to agree with you on this, but I still really like it. The ending of ''Onward where Most with Ravin I may meet'' has a slowish section anyways. It's a lot to take in anyways.

hmmmmmm for me it's that black metal doesn't do it justice
as in, saying it's black metal doesn't really convey almost anything about them

I recommend a few listens through the new EP to really digest it (obviously) it is chaotic but as with all Deathspell albums there's always melodies bursting through the chaos (or sometimes buried in it) at first listen it might just sound like noise but it's so dense that you pick up new melodies each time you listen. Also note the nasty gargling scream in the second song. Since the EP begins with a lot of atmosphere and it ends off with the same noisy overwhelming atmosphere almost like a bookend, it makes the whole thing feel like a battle or something that rages and then dies out with the last track. Solid 4 I think.

"i understand you but i think the underlying music is actually deeply interesting and i'm looking forward to more listens".
I still really enjoy that aspect of both bands, I just think it works best when building to something or being complimented by slower/atmospheric sections, going that route for the majority of a track gets tedious for me.

it's closer to black metal than anything else, but just saying 'black metal' barely describes the new one tbh

yea exactly, but the other thing is, i don't think it's because they sound like they're in another genre, but i hate to describe them as 'impossible to describe'
