It's also the only thing that I can hear on this album is the overblasting of drums and guitars that are amped to 11. This might be the loudest album I have and I don't mean that as a compliment either. I generally have to put whatever device I'm listening to at a much lower volume when playing anything off this.

Back Burner is killer

The production on this always sounded a little off for some reason though

EDIT: "and was reminded how overbearingly loud the production on this was" Ah, there we go. The cymbals especially, even though I generally enjoy them

yeah the production really ruins this for me (also I don't think the songwriting is up to par with everything after this but idk)

I mean, this album is less "chug chug" and more "chunk chunk" and "CHINA CRASH CHINA CRASH CHINA CRASH" and it hurts my ears

Agreed, Constellations is where they actually started trying some different thingS, which is still their best imo.

And I actually think Thrill Seeker may be a bit better on that end as well. Certainly a "funner" album, if you will.

It's not any quieter when you see them live, the drummer absolutely rails on that China.

Agreed.

On Composure for instance, it works really well when he follows that guitar riff/line. But then maybe on a song like Vital Signs, when they have that little 2-step section, it seems to detract from whatever they were trying to accomplish there.

That's also probably just me being way too particular

The production on this is pretty fun, but it does get somewhat obnoxious over time
