The album is pretty solid, I listen to it quite a lot while I'm running and working out. Some of the elements seem generic though and underdeveloped, like Are We The Waiting and Wake Me Up When September Ends, the guitar parts are flat out horrible. I like the two epics, Boulevard, and Holiday, and I recommend it, because this is much better than any of the fodder played on the radio today.
I really don't like any Green Day, this album is just worse than everything else by them. Take that, fanboys!
It's an awesome CD, but I disagree with your review on many levels.
I don't know much about drums, so I can't say anything about Tre. But in terms of Billie Joe and Mike's playing, it hasn't evolved. Billie Joe is an amazing guitar player thats all I know, but he didn't give it his all in AI, and Mike...well being a bassist I was SOOOOOO dissapointed...SOOOOOO dissapointed. I usually have the time of my life playing Mike's Lines. Longview, Welcome To Paradise, Minority (the verses), Basket Case, Nice Guys Finish Last...those are fun! There were variations and such...but in AI all his lines just go behind the power-chords with no challenge to playing them...Hell, if someone will put up the tabs to Homecoming then I will no the whole album. The only other whole album I know is Dookie (which is fun to play). Letterbomb and St. Jimmy should also have been rated much higher...
And JoS was much better than homecoming, except for I: The Death of St. Jimmy. I love the breaks between the notes...that makes it sooo fun to play. It's so easy to jump around...simply awesome...the rest of Homecoming though is much weaker than JoS, which has only one bad part, Dearly Beloved.

I love this album though and it's been in my CD player since Sept 21, except for when I take it out to put it in my discman. I even love it so much I burnt about 25 copies and gave em away at school, and bought a copy for my girlfriend on our first date even though I had no idea if we would go anywhere.

I finally went out and bought this after work last night, and I was not disappointed. This whole album is awesome. and I gotta disagree with masterbasser on dearly beloved, I thought that part was awesome. AI was a definitely a huge step up after their last two disappointing albums.

alot of the high rankers on this site loved this album, but i did not. I heard boulavard of broken dreams and american idiot, and was bored by it nearly immediatly, mostly because of the seemingly repetetive power chord sequences and put-on vocals.
But thats just my opinion.

green day is ok but they have turned into more punk than rock like blink 182 they were good in the nintys but ther more pop/punk now early ac/dc jeff beck, eric clapton, srv, page can blow them off stage

i was disappointed by mike's bass playing on this album. he'd always been an excellent bassist, but now his basslines resemble those of blink and new found glory. he says he simplified them because it was the song and not the basslines that was important. but to me, the prominent bass was a huge part of green day musically. in my opinion, the basslines now only take away from the songs by being so uncreative. other than that, i loved this album.

/ Tru dat.
My bassist in my band can play longview and it is just a sick song on bass. Mike is a good bassist but fails to prove his strong points like u said.
But i still like hes songs!

YOu're judging the album based on the 2 singles? It's a concept album. you have to listen to the disc in its entirety. No way to judge this album without doing that.

Average album, problem with Green Day was Dookie was far too good to allow for a genuine follow-up, now everything they release gets overshadowed by it. American Idiot is really nothing special.

The album's decent.. But whenever I hear "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" I can't help but think that Avril Lavigne wrote it. Not that that's a bad thing.
