and on that note, i'm actually not terribly familiar with Venom, Mercyful Fate, or Celtic Frost. i'm not saying i'm terribly UNfamiliar, i can certainly recognize each one by their sound when i hear them. it's just that black metal is far from being the only thing i listen to, and there's only so many hours each day to which i can devote familiarizing myself with music. out of those three, though, i do like Mercyful Fate most. This Message Edited On 04.22.08

Well that might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. And how can you not like Emperor. Well at least this album and Anthems.

All the talk about this album on the Vertebrae thread made me want to listen to this. Amazing album. Ihshan is a fucking beast on this album. His vocals now can't even compare to how they were back when they made this album.

This is right up there with Bergtatt for best black metal album ever. Ihshan needs to get his shit in gear cos his new stuff sucks.

Yeah Bergtatt is my favorite and then Nattens Madrigal. I don't know about after that though. Theres this, Transilvanian Hunger, The Somberlain, Dusk and Her Embrace, Sons of Northern Darkness, and probably some others that I'm forgetting.

speaking of Sons of Northern Darkness, i need to give Immortal another shot. Last time I listened to them I just couldnt get past the toad vocals. The music was amazing though so I dunno.

Yeah I can see why some people wouldn't be able to get into Abbath's vocals. I love them though.

I must say, Emperor's cover of A Fine Day To Die near perfection. It's a perfect song to introduce to somebody special. And when i mean somebody special, I mean me.

We're all special. Black metal fits my dark and brutal I walk alone speech perfectly. This was my first introduction to B.M so I'm going to take it out again and see if I can reraise back to 4.

Started listening to this album: holy shit this kicks ass, ive really started getting into black metal now, apart from dissection and emperor does any1 know any similiar bands? i prefer the more melodic/atmospheric black metal and not the more brutal counterpart, its just too much for me.This Message Edited On 04.30.09

Check out Limbonic Art - In Abhorrence dementia, symphonic black metal record with a similar atmosphere to this one, and Nachthymnen by Abigor. And of course check out Anthems to the welkin at dusk if you haven't already.
