Just popped this in my car and gave it a listen the other day. It still is a great album. It's completely different from Crack The Skye, though. I still think I enjoy Blood Mountain more, though.

Mastodon is BALLS.

This review is completely spot on. This is where Mastodon lost me as a fan; too much progressive nonsense, not enough bone-crushing. Also, Mastodon? More like Massive Dong, amirite?

This album is impossible to listen to in one sitting for me... Usually Colony Of Birchmen and The Wolf Is Loose is enough.

This review breaks my heart.

I agree. This is by far their least enjoyable record out of the first four. Not quite as heavy and groovy as their first two, and not as proggy and melodic as Crack The Skye. Except for a few songs this is kinda forgettable... Sounds like a typical transitional album, where they didn't quite know where to go with their sund. CTS was a monstrous step up to this one here, so maybe making Blood Mountain was necessary for that

Def in the top 3. It goes proggy and gets weird while still being heavy and chaotic. I miss their sludgier style, the new shit is fine just not as good

I consider Emperor to be one of their best as well actually.
