Going back to the first page of comments, the reason why people credited Brent with being the ‘secret sauce’ in the overall Mastodon sound was because from a technical point of view, the arpeggiated sound was primarily him. It gave otherwise fairly standard riffs a depth and texture that other bands just didn’t have around the time of Remission and Leviathan. It wasn’t just for bells and whistles either, he’d connect entire sections with it and build entire tracks from a finger picked motif. Having said that, his heart was not in it anymore and it’s therefore redundant to think ‘what if’ with regards to a guy who wasn’t only completely checked out, but was causing a lot of internal problems with his behaviour.

I've enjoyed individual songs here and there, but the only Mastodon album I've ever truly loved is Leviathan. I'll check this out but H&G was dull so don't have high hopes

My quick soundoff: Brent’s vocal presence and guitar twang is missing, but in turn it seems the newfound synergy between the current guitarist and the keyboard player gives the band a jazzy style and a darker ambient tone overall. The band sounds reinvigorated and you can tell Bill worked on these riffs for a number of years. It’s cool he finally let loose this time around. Not to mention Troy and Brann bring their A game on the vocal department making up for the missing void left by Brent. Props to the band for carrying on and thriving.
