"I just don’t find him to be consistently great at writing vocal melodies that work and I know I’m not alone in that opinion"

You're not alone in this, I agree with you. I think HH and Alpha are catchy though, the only songs prior to P4 that got stuck in my head

'brother scarlet is like the most infectious song ever to me haha. genuinely shocked you disagree.' [2]

I first got into Periphery with P2 and god damn I got so addicted to Scarlet lol.

'Heavy Heart and Alpha are peak Spencer and anyone who disagrees lacks whimsy.'

Nah peak Spencer is on Stranger Things, he uses absolutely everything on that song

calling Spencer the "weakest member of the band" is certainly a take

Spencer is incredibly talented, but I would say he owns both the valleys and the peaks on Periphery records. There are some songs I've chosen not to show friends because I know they'll hate Spencer's nasally, whiny, flamboyant, borderline sexual delivery lol. Straight up, that little dude sometimes moans. Why?

But when he drops that shit, he's genuinely one of the best singers I know of in heavy music.

"You’re giving them way too much of a benefit of the doubt in the songwriting department lol. This is the most reined in they’ve been in forever and it’s still slapdash"

That's why they need a producer to reel them in. Basically the producer should act as the one piecing all their wild ideas together into coherent songs. I'm sure they can do it, most of Juggernaut and PIV (Garden in the Bones e.g.) work as coherent songs.

He can be very weird and annoying but also write the greatest hooks ever. Vocal talent-wise, he's amazing. Very skilled vocalist both clean and harsh

butt.

I find he's more likely to be annoying when he sings in lower registers. As he reaches higher, he strains his voice in a sick way where it starts to get raspy and screamy but still clean. Great example is the middle of Reptile right before it gets heavy. Fucking perfect.

There is 0 denial of his talent it’s totally in how it’s used. It’s like if a drummer is absolutely insane but they write parts that detract or don’t fit or sound good. Thats why I say he’s the worst member, that’s not really a knock cause they’re all bonkers talented. He just consistently puts out stinkers even to this day. But he’s gotten way better for sure imo

I’m also perhaps a bit salty because I thought this band was always pretty mid, then they dropped P4 and I thought they turned a corner, and now the last two are different but the same in that it’s back to mega hit or miss. I don’t know why they can’t put it together consistently for me. But also a lot of people seem to still like this so maybe it’s a me thing as well

butt.

yeah I generally agree with that, although I still think P2 as a whole was their peak. P4 is almost there

Agreed Nash, for me the run from P2 to PIV really showed them getting better and better and now they have put out increasingly disappointing albums

if p5 was just wildfire, atropos, wax wings, zagreus, dracul it'd be a perfect 40min album.
