Finally got this. I'm loving the atmosphere so far in the first song.

After all the crap I hear fans give this album, I finally pick it up...it's the only TMV album I don't have and I figure it can't be too bad cause in general TMV owns. Well, it doesn't suck, but the first 3 tracks and El Ciervo Vulnerado are freaking boring. The rest of the album is solid, especially Day of the Baphomets.

Over the past week this has turned from my least to most favourite Mars Volta album. The music is so mature and so well arranged, and is host to some of their finest work.

Tetragrammaton, Viscera eyes and Day of the Baphomets are totally ruling my life right now.

day of the baphomets does rule, but I can't say that about the majority of the album.

Its sad how low of an rating this album has. Compared to the rest of the 3.5s out there, this album blows them away. This music is original and entertaining. Viscera Eyes and Day of the Baphomets are 2 of the best tracks I've ever heard; and Mechamputecture and Tetragrammaton are pretty damn good aswell. It might not have been what most people were expecting, but give it a few more listens and you may realize how great this album is. Give credit where credit is due, this album deserves a better rating.

No, it doesn't. In comparison to their other works, it is definitely lacking.

I still haven't decided what to think of this band. Like, on one hand I think they're annoying, and on the other there's something really cool about them. I guess I'll give them a few more listens.

I disagree...this is definitely their hardest to get into, but I also think it's better than De-Loused and maybe Bedlam (Not really sure yet). It's the TMV album i find myself listening to most because it has so much amazingness.

It's different then all their other releases because of the feel it has which is a more mellow feel at a lot of point unlike past albums, but it has some of their best songs (Day of the Baphomets only being beaten by Cassandra Gemini). The only problem I have with the album is the track order is at times a bit jarring. Otherwise I think their second best and right now i'd rate em...

Frances>Amputechture=Bedlam>De-Loused all of which I enjoy more than 90% of the albums i have.

Pretty good review, though you obviously don't get either Nirvana or At the Drive In. ATD-I weren't just plagiarists: they combined hardcore with thrash, jazz, psychedelica, electronica and pop and had a sound of their own. Nirvana were also groundbreaking because they presented a way in which alt-rock could still be powerful and catchy without either totally conforming to the mainstream audience or alienating pop fans. They aren't, as you say, just 'Husker Du aggression with Pixies hooks'. That's rubbish.

By far this was Mars Volta's weakest release. I found it, got hyped and by the time song number three was around I felt like I was trying to crawl through a dank underground tunnel trying to find my way out. this was the epitome of self-indulgence in my opinion and i never was able to get through it in one sitting.
