this doesn’t sound remotely live, and it doesn’t sound like they sound live either
I saw them live semi recently and yes it does lol.

I haven't seen them live so I can't speak on that, but I just wish the production was, idk, dirtier?

They sound super polished live these days, which is odd. But nice.

it is odd to see mayhem be just another polished metal band signed to a major label but good for them, they earned it.

necrobutcher (bassist) is actually an og, hellhammer isn't technically but has been on everything besides deathcrush.

wild. as someone who isn't tapped in at all I'd always kinda just assumed Varg whacking Euronymous was pretty much the end of them.

definitely fascinating. the story never gets old hearing it retold. i must've heard it recounted 100 times by now lol

Gonna have to give this another listen sometime with fresh ears but it's all just minor chord to blast beat to minor chord to me.

this grew on me as well. multiple listens for me made me realize i was underselling it at first. definitely a continuation of daemon but a bit more straight forward. more closely you realize there are a good amount of intricate riffs and subtle tempo changes here that can wash away first few passes. i miss their more adventurous stuff but this is just rock solid black metal executed by some really good musicians. i could listen to attila read the dictionary in his 1000 styles of singing/screaming and be entertained.
opener is one of their best and the closer is really really good too. the ending with the tribal drums was so cool, i hope they pick up where that left off next time. i get why some are bored but idk even lesser mayhem stands out from so many bands trying to recapture a sound like this. nobody creates an atmosphere like them.

Tbh I feel like the opener is one of the weakest tracks here unfortunately, but yeah I agree with the rest of what you’re saying, my first few times it just felt like a bit of a same-y, if technically proficient, mid-tier bm album, but the more I listen the more I appreciate the songwriting and I’m coming around to it being a bit more impressive than I first thought.

damn surprised you don't dig the opener, really love the intro especially. such a fun spooky vibe and the cleans really work for me. good variety of tempos as well where i think mayhem have always shined.
glad you on the same page otherwise though friend! tons of subtle intricacies and two of my musical goats, attila and hellhammer are at the top of their game. i suppose mayhem raised the bar quite high so i get being lukewarm but for me this captures exactly what i would want a modern take on classic norweigian black metal album to sound like. if anyone has any modern bm bands that sound like this i'd be happy to hear it, but i don't think they really exist and that's why i dig this more than most i think.

Finally got around to spinning this and... hate to say it but this was pretty dull for me. My least favorite in their discog i think. Hope they are a little more inspired next go around because this sounded like them going through the motions
