This band only has 2 good albums, Owls and this. I have no idea what their "politics" are, just that their lyric writing sucks. It wasn't good on Owls, either, that album is just good, so the lyrical quality is largely irrelevant.

Owls was lightning in a bottle, sand baptism slaps. This is a gigantic yawn fest

I dunno if it's a yawn fest. It's aight. I'd have a good time watching this live, and I certainly own shittier albums than this. I think.

Saw these guys live tonight warming up for NeO and I was so disappointed when I remembered they were playing this album in full and nothing off Owls lol

Band rules. Album rules.

I saw an interview with the current vocalist (the bassist I think?) and he pretty much said Jake kept doing really stupid shit that was affecting the band and literally "had" to leave in the middle of one of their tours due to said stupid shit.
Ultimately that is what lead to him being removed from the band, according to that interview.
Definitely different than what a lot of people (myself included) were theorizing, thinking that his hearing loss progressing was what lead to the split.

Wasn't overly impressed with the first few tracks on the first spin, but everything clicked from Despair Church onward and then the opening tracks fell into line on the second spin.

Damn, this is groovy.
EDIT: it's all downhill after the second track

On first listen this sounds like a relative improvement over The Work, though given the rather subpar quality of that record this isn't saying much. The shift to a more accessible sound, soaring clean prog metal vocals, a less consistently punishing, lighter sound: it is a far cry from their peak (circa Owls).
