Flowers and You is probably the most popular but that line
“Just a simple conversation about nothing much at all
Couldn't keep me in the room, I just kept walking down the hall“
It just hits way too close to home and I honestly don’t want them to play it live anymore. I’ve quietly went to the bathroom and cried the last two times I’ve seen them when the played that song

SHE PASSED AWAY ABOUT AN HOUR AGO
WHILE YOU WERE ON STAGE LIVING THE DREAM
It's a hard 5 honestly.

Hardest of 5’s. I don’t think I can call it my favorite record ever because of how painful it is, but it’s maybe the most important record I’ve ever listened to.
Grief is universal, we all experience it, but the way that album sometimes poetically sometimes bluntly hits you with it is just amazing.

And instrumentally it’s still great, so haters, if you’re going for that then you can suck my dick from behind my fucking legs

re-listening to Lament rn and it's still great, I agree it has better production too. I think the reason I like this one more is it feels more playful and varied, not so tied down to sadboyisms

@sowing I can't believe you never listened to this band when they have Andy Hull on one of their song lol
Album is growing nicely but I'm not really liking the last three songs (that's 0/2 for the Jeremy/Julien combo for me sadly)

Oh im 2/2 on Julien songs, hit me with the Julien Baker/Touche collab album tbh. Love that it went into a completely different direction than Skyscraper. I was really thinking we’d get a quiet little track to end things but they went all out

I would totally go for a Julien/Touche album.

I’m so fucking serious when I say that. I think they could make something great.
I like boygenius but it doesn’t really feel collaborative. It feels like they all individually wrote songs and then decided who gets vocal duty. Like you can really tell a Phoebe track from a Julien track

Skyscraper is one of the best album closer’s ever. Especially on Stage 4 concept

I adore it. Have no idea why they released it as a single before the album dropped.
Like that’s fucking baffling

I keep fucking Julien name because in french it's almost exclusively a boy's name aaah
Me not liking Skyscraper is a mystery really, I like Julien solo stuff/Boygenius, Stage Four is my favourite TA album, lyrics are beautiful, mv too... Their voices together just don't click with me. Hope it'll change one day because I want to appreciate S4 in full at least once.

So yeah... I don't think the emotional subject matter of Stage Four brought anything else in musically to make it a special record. That's what makes it "over rated" in my mind.
Like if you keep all of the instruments and vocal melodies the same on Lament, but change the words to make that one the album about losing a parent to cancer, I think that would surely be their highest rated.
I get that you can't do that and the words do matter and do hit hard. But for me there's nothing else that separates that album from the rest of their discography

"Is Survived By is my fave but Stage Four is definitely their strongest (especially emotionally) and probs the one to have at the top of your priority list"
GreyShadow has the right of it. The last three tracks of Is Survived By are peak TA but Stage Four is just essential listening
also listening to this new one here and Mezzanine RIPS

I was pretty disappointed by this. I've been a fan forever and this feels like a huge step down from anything they've done.

I think the sequencing is off. The Glue is a much better closing track than Goodbye for Now, and I say this as someone who loves Julien Baker. That limp ending hurts the whole album
but I really, really like Mezzanine, This Routine and The Glue. They're not S-tier TA but they're great tracks

lowkey addicted to this album now, I cannot stop listening to it. I dont even have any reservations left, it’s just good. I watched their Outbreak set from this year and shed a couple tears at the realization that this band has been a part of my life for around 15 years now.

Really good album, I like it more than lament, for whatever reason it feels like a quicker listen.
