It has some moments for me but man, they really are few and far between. Some of this is legit painful to sit through. The title track is great but that's really the only one I'd say really feels like DH

Just please take any of my harsh commentary on metalcore with a grain of salt because it takes a lot to make me enjoy modern metalcore

I couldn’t rec a track Ectier I don’t remember one lmao. The only ones I “remember” are the singles (Perpetual Terminal and societal bile) because I heard them before the album dropped. I think nihilist undone was cool. Thats it

“this barely feels like Darkest hour anymore”
This is my problem with both this and the S/T. I feel like the soul of the band is largely missing from both albums. Some people argue that this was the case as soon as Norris left, but I think there’s a lot of good stuff on their following releases. It’s just the 2 mentioned that feel mostly empty to me.

S/T is full of bangers. You need to look past some of the most obviously label-influenced songs and find the hidden gems, which is at least half of that album basically. Full of passion and a fantastic performance by John.

Modern metalcore mostly sucks ass unless it’s a.) cosplaying under a “hardcore” or “skramz” banner, or b.) is an already established legacy band. The big “alt” labels essentially destroyed what the genre was about initially after they saw dollar signs post like 05

there's a lot of revival bands doing the 2000s mxc stuff super well tho botb, the newest Dying Wish is heat and the emotional stuff off it like "Paved in Sorrow" is just as resonant as stuff like The End of Heartache was back in the day.

@Row: I listened to one of their albums and it felt like everything sounded the same and nothing stuck out. I'm willing to admit maybe I checked the wrong album, what's your rec?

ah, yeah i was starting from the beginning with "the bound feed the gagged" and it felt...boring to me. it felt stuck in one gear. nothing was technically bad, but the lack of variance made even the 22 minute runtime feel like it went on longer than it did
yeah the new one's even better than the first one and I loved the first DW album. Going all-in on emotion with songs like Lost in the Fall and Paved in Sorrow was the right call.
