Chinese Democracy is absolute trash imo. But then again, I don't like much of anything GNR has ever done

'chinese democracy is the last mainstream rock album to push the genre forward'
Chinese Democracy sounded antiquated upon release though, a Frankenstein's monster of taking influences over a twenty year gestation or whatever, it's very bad
If I'd have been Axl I'd have borrowed Buckethead's KFC bucket and gone into hiding forever after that

There is so much wrong with that statement.

Does beg the question though what is the last mainstream rock album to push the genre forward?
I haven’t a clue tbh

It makes for a fun thought exercise, if you care about that sort of thing. I think there is some value in that because it can make for interesting discussion, and is the point of a forum not discussion?

I mean, let's be honest here... the only correct answer is "Results May Vary" by American nu-metal/rap metal act Limp Bizkit

Jezus that's a great and difficult question to answer. Mainstream rock seems pretty dead at the moment. Most obvious answers would probably be something from Coldplay or Muse in terms of influence and success (not quality). Nothing but Thieves maybe idk, it's been slim pickings this last decade and a half.
Edit* In terms of the forward trajectory of the genre (and decidedly downward I think we can all agree), theres a case to be made for (dare I say it) Imagine Dragons. Machine Gun Kelly getting a grammy nomination doesn't do the genre any favors either. Fuckin hell mainstream rock is dead and buried isn't it?

It's so funny, because I've come across quite a few people who would give a pass to Greta Van Fleet and MGK because "well, at least rock is back on the charts again!" And I'm like, is this really where we're setting our standards now? If that's the kind of rock that makes it through, I'd rather just move on to other genres for my fix of new music

Yep, dead as a doornail. Almost all my favorite rock and related bands from the 2000s-mid 2010s have gone downhill by now (2013 was such a great year, didn't realize what I had). I'm grateful when a legend like Gabriel who has nothing else to prove drops something new that's excellent. I guess indie rock/folk and dream pop/psych/shoegaze are kind of flourishing at least.
