@onion IDK I thought surviving was decent and an attempt at more mature and cinematographic sound. I agree that Place Your Debts is a great song. Telepath is not, even though I swear there was another song with that artwork — oh, it was the Manchester Orchestra song, which is much better. Imo. Unfortunately.

Telepath by MO is an amazing song.

I listened through surviving again the last couple months and the closing track (congratulations) kicks ass

Yeah nowadays Adam sounds more traditionally palatable to the people who bawk at any "whiny" timbre but the 2002-2006 era was something else

To clarify Telepath by MO is great, Table for Glasses by MO is great, Telepath by Jimmy is not great, but Place Your Debts is fantastic. Haha, sorry, I got confused with same titles and identical cover art myself.

MO is, of course, a better band, but it’s hard to feel sentimental about them — not least because their best records are very contemplative, piercingly sad, and masterfully polished, like Brand New without personality (flaws).

And Jimmy is a band I grew up with, I even have Stay On My Side Tonight on vinyl. I like their attempt to both stay true to themselves and evolve but most of all survive. That’s why their last album is so good. “555” is an absolute banger of an ornamental song for retired pop punk emo kids

Can’t say I was surprised. Band has quickly became a legacy act and if I’m being honest with myself, their live performance has even been feeling stale the more I’ve seen them over the years.

as someone who will forever stand by tidal wave and happiness is being their most impactful work to me, i was more than a little surprised they followed those up by throwing everything that made those albums special away. all came down to the numbers game in the end ig

like, they had the late career more mature more expansive thing down perfectly. they even got there after the awkward and bad self titled, and now we're pretty much back at square one. i still think they can rebound since the arrangements are worse than the bones of the songs themselves, but they really need to stay tf away from apte forever

I liked Tidal Wave a fair amount. Thought Happiness and self titled were just fine. At the end of the day though, I dont really care to re-visit any of their post New Again work...

I will say that I find even Happiness and self titled leagues above this. This was is not square one, this is square negative 1.

self titled still sits at the bottom for me because its got some songs that are truly genuinely awful to me lol but its bonuses are better than anything here so theres a world in which that album coulda been smth

I don’t recall the bonus tracks, will have to go check those out.. the 4 I would keep off self titled:

El Paso - not a total hit but I think them trying something new worked here

Best Places To Be A Mom - best song on album by far

This Is All Now - simple but solid

You Got Me - simple but solid

How are we leaving It Doesn't Feel A Thing Like Falling off the keepers list? But yeah, self titled is the worst. I had to go back to Happiness Is because I largely ignored it due to self titled. But Tidal Wave ruled and made me revisit, and love, Happiness is. I like 152 as a fun record, but there's not much meat to it.

Can you Feel That (Here I am) is one of my fave TBS songs. So is the self titled b-side Mourning Sickness. My fave TBS album is New Again but Happiness Is has to be up there.
