Metal is in a more progressive cycle, just like in 1988, but of a significantly lower quality

A lot of this new wave of progressive metal doesn’t feel all that progressive to me. Even the good shit like Horrendous feels very late 80s/early 90s. Nothing wrong with that, just that there’s almost a retro feel to this new movement. Unless it’s masterfully constructed I just shrug and move on
a few exceptions like the latest Kostnateni, Scarcity or Alphaville by Imperial Triumphant aside, not much has struck me as particularly unique (and decent!) Thinking about it, that’s around one release per year

"progressive" has a sound, its the same way in rock music. Progressive in rock just means "sounds like rush or pink floyd" or something along those lines.
I would agree with demon that alphaville is actual progressive metal because it sounds different

Sure. I’m not going down that rabbit role (again, lol) as something can be progressive and also derivative (weirdly, but yeah)
Maybe replace it with ‘pioneering’ or just adding that word alongside ‘progressive’ would illustrate my overarching point more effectively idk

“progressive” has just come to mean “anything that doesn’t adhere 100% to genre tropes” which make the term meaningless to me.
this has way more in common with alt rock and grunge than it does anything “progressive” but because it doesn’t sound like devourment everyone is just gonna call it “progressive”

Oops progressive like, long songs, with dynamic shifts, changes and influences? Challenging a predictable formula?

I've been saying these guys are brutal grunge from day one
|

Brutal Grunge is gonna come up as a spotify genre now
|

that would be much better than what’s actually gonna happen, which is some nerd on RYM calling it “overcastcore” or some shit.

I agree with Hype too, for the record, just chatting, although maybe…

idk man I just like the way it sounds. the only genres I care about anymore are “good” or “bad” and I think this is pretty good.

I don't think that's why this sucks at all. It sucks for me because it feels lazy and devoid of energy, especially if we're comparing to their previous albums.

To suggest that you give equal weight to all genres is a take I cannot possibly comprehend (yeah you didn’t say that but that’s the insinuation)
And yeah I only care about good / bad as well, those genres just tend to be quite bad generally. There will be exceptions of course. I’m just not surprised it didn’t work out
